Virkaanasettamispuhe Vaasassa

Hyvä Maria, hyvät ystävät, sisaret ja veljet, sisters and brothers!

Today is a special  day of celebration here at Vaasa prison. Our long-serving prison chaplain, Juha Haapaniemi, served faithfully in this ministry for nearly two decades, beginning in 2006. After his retirement, the search began for someone to continue this important work. Among many strong applicants, Maria Talola was chosen, and today she will be installed and blessed to this ministry.

Maria, sinulla on pitkä ja monipuolinen kokemus papin työstä eri seurakunnissa ja erilaisissa tehtävissä. Nyt edessäsi on uudenlainen työympäristö ja uudenlainen seurakunta. Täällä kohtaat eri ikäisiä ihmisiä, monista maista ja erilaisista elämäntilanteista. Moni kantaa mukanaan raskaita kokemuksia, epäonnistumisia, yksinäisyyttä ja epävarmuutta tulevaisuudesta.

Kerroit vahvuuksiksesi ihmistuntemuksen, joustavuuden ja kiinnostuksen ihmisten elämäntarinoihin. Olet myös tottunut toimimaan erilaisten kulttuurien ja uskonnollisten taustojen keskellä. Juuri tällaisia lahjoja tässä tehtävässä tarvitaan — sekä vankien että henkilökunnan rinnalla kulkiessa.

Dear friends,

Prison is a place where people cannot escape themselves.
Behind these walls there is often much silence, many questions and much longing. Longing for freedom, for forgiveness, for reconciliation, for a new beginning.

That is why the work of a prison chaplain is deeply important. A chaplain is not here to judge people by their past. A chaplain is here to listen, to walk alongside people and to remind them that no human life is without value.

In the Christian faith we believe that every person is created in the image of God. Human dignity does not disappear because a person has failed, made mistakes or lost direction in life.

And that is also how Jesus encountered people. Again and again, he went close to those whom others avoided: the rejected, the ashamed and the broken. He saw in them not only their past, but also their future.

There is a well-known Christian saying: “There is nothing you can do to make God love you more, and nothing you can do to make God love you less.”That message is at the heart of the Gospel.

Kirkko tekee työtä kaikkialla, missä ihmiset elävät — seurakunnissa, sairaaloissa, armeijassa ja myös vankiloissa. Papin tehtävä on olla täällä turvallinen kuuntelija ja rinnalla kulkija. Pappi on ihminen, jonka kanssa voi puhua luottamuksellisesti niin uskosta kuin elämästäkin — peloista, pettymyksistä, syyllisyydestä ja toivosta.

Maria, papin tehtävä täällä on kuunnella, rohkaista ja tukea. Mutta samalla myös pitää esillä evankeliumin hyvää sanomaa: sitä, että jokainen ihminen on arvokas ja että aina on toivoa.

Dear friends,

The core message of the Christian faith is hope.

We cannot change the past. We cannot undo what has already happened. But we believe in forgiveness, grace and new beginnings.

In human society, people may have to carry responsibility and consequences for their actions. But before God, mercy is always possible. The Gospel tells us that no person is beyond redemption and no life is beyond hope.

That is why the Church is present also in places like this — to remind people that they are not forgotten.

Maria, olet saanut jo muutaman kuukauden ajan tutustua tähän työhön ja tähän yhteisöön. On ollut ilo kuulla, miten motivoituneesti ja lämpimästi puhut tästä tehtävästä. Tänään siunaamme sinut tähän virkaan rukouksin ja pyydämme sinulle viisautta, herkkyyttä ja voimaa.

Huolehdi myös omasta jaksamisestasi ja oman sielusi hoidosta. Kukaan ei jaksa kantaa muita yksin.

And finally:

May God give you wisdom in difficult encounters,
compassion for every person you meet,
strength for the demanding days,
and hope that carries both you and those you serve.
